It's my pleasure to welcome you today, all of you, to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

Uh, this is, um, a holy day, a solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Feast of her Assumption, body and soul into Heaven.

And this is, of course, also, a very special and holy day for Beatrice and Chris who today exchange their vows of marriage in our presence and in the Lord's sight.

To prepare ourselves now to celebrate worthily, let us once again acknowledge our sin as we ask for the Lord's forgiveness.

Lord Jesus, mighty God and prince of peace, Lord, have mercy.

Then God's temple in Heaven was opened and the Arc of His Covenant could be seen in the temple.

Then another sign appeared in the sky.

It was a huge red dragon with seven heads and 10 horns and on its heads were seven diadems.

Brothers and sisters, live in love as Christ loved us and handed Himself over for us.

Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, He Himself the Savior of the body.

As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives even as Christ loved the church and handed Himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath water with the word that He might present Himself the church in splendor without spot or wrinkle or any such thing that she might be holy and without blemish.

So, also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.

He who loves his wife, loves himself.

For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it even as Christ does the church because we are members of His body.

For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.

This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself and the wife should respect her husband.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Glory to You, O Lord.

Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant lept in her womb and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, Blessed are you among women.

And blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And how does this happen to me?

For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb lept for joy.

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.

And Mary said, My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.

My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.

From this day, all generations will call me blessed.

The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is His name.

He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of His arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich He has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

So just by way of brief introduction, I am Father Nathaniel Minette, the, uh, one of the many first cousins of, uh, Chris Schachl.

And it certainly is a great honor for me that Chris and Beatrice, uh, invited me to, um, not only come celebrate the Holy Mass today but also to offer, uh, the homily on this beautiful occasion of their wedding.

And I also want to welcome as well each one of you who has come here to pray with us at this most important part of the day.

Um, it's no secret that oftentimes many non-Catholics will also join us at times like this for a beautiful wedding, um, for a funeral, and I just want you to know how welcome you are to be here to be praying with us.

And I invite you to participate as far as you feel comfortable in the standing, in the sitting, in the kneeling, in the prayers, all of that.

And just, uh, as sort of a friendly public service announcement, sometimes there's confusion about, uh, reception of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church, so, uh, for those of us who are perhaps joining us who are not Catholic, uh, you're certainly welcome to make what we call a spiritual communion, asking the Lord into your heart.

And if you wish to, uh, receive a blessing from the priest at Communion time you can come up with your arms crossed like that to let him know for a blessing.

So I just wanna thank everyone for respecting Catholic belief about receiving the Holy Eucharist.

So as I said, I'm Chris's cousin.

I'm a little bit older than he is, not too much.

And as you probably know, he lived in Japan the first number of years of his life and the first nine years of my life we lived in Michigan, so neither in Wisconsin nor here in beautiful Georgia.

In any case, I recall Chris coming to visit.

It didn't happen too often, but he would come and visit and in those early years, I suppose he were maybe three years old or so, he mostly spoke Japanese, and of course I don't really speak a lick of Japanese and I wouldn't want to try and embarrass myself here in front of Japanese speakers.

So Chris would come, he would mostly speak Japanese, but that was kind of fun.

Couldn't make out anything of what he would say.

Um, but I remember Uncle Joe saying, You know, he'll, he speaks English.

You know, he can speak some English.

You just gotta keep, you know, kinda keep asking him, you know?

So he had this book out, I remember, maybe you remember this, we had this book out and it had, it had a train and I wanna say, and it's like, Chris, what's this?

What's this?

What's this, Chris?

What's this?

And it'd jump Japanese word, Japanese word, Japanese word.

Must be the word for train, I don't know what it is.

Anyways, What's this?

And he eventually he would say, Train.

Like, Oh, okay, look at that.

Say it in English.

Actually he said train, perfect.

Well, I was never that successful in getting any words out of Chris.

Think yesterday we crossed a milestone and there were seven he's spoken to me in his whole life.

So.

Beatrice I've spoken to about three times.

I think she's up to about 77,000, so.

Uh, in any case, uh, and for myself I'm probably at about 78 or so, so we'll see what kind of exchange we can have.

But Chris is a man of, he's a man of few words.And honestly, that makes me think a little bit about St. Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Of course, we celebrate today the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven, and we recall that she was married to St. Joseph.

And there's no recorded word of his in Scripture at all.

I'm sure he had some things to say, but none of his words made it into Holy Scripture, and only a few of Our Lady's words made it into Holy Scripture.

And it's not necessary that a person who likes to be on the quieter side is necessarily a good listener, but I think it might bespeak the fact that he is a good listener, or that she is a good listener.

And so then when we look to the example of St. Joseph, we know that he was a very good listener.

He listened to the voice of the Lord, and sought to follow the will of God in everything in his life.

And we know that Our Lady was a good listener.

She too listened to the voice of the Lord, and sought to follow Him in every aspect of her life.

People talk about how good communication is so important to a healthy marriage.

There's no doubt about it, but I would propose that good communication begins with good listening, listening to the Lord, and listening to one another.

We have to be able to hear the other, and then we do need to respond, but there also needs to be speaking.

There needs to be a response to have full communication, but it's gotta start with that listening heart, a heart which seeks to understand the other, and then to respond.

So I just want to encourage Beatrice as the bride of the day, to look to the example of Mary, the bride of St. Joseph, and even spouse of the Holy Spirit, as that perfect model of a wife.

I'd like to encourage Chris to look to the example of St. Joseph, husband of Our Lady, as a beautiful model of a husband, and look to them and how they listened to the Lord, and listened to one another.

It would be good for all of us to look to them as models.

But good communication, certainly without diminishing its importance in any way, is not the only key to marital success.

I'm sure every married couple among us would be able to testify to that.

And Chris and Beatrice chose this beautiful passage of Holy Scripture from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, which spoke to them so much about marriage.

And indeed, it's one of the classic paradigmatic texts of Holy Scripture when it comes to marriage.

So, I would like to invite you to allow me to take s- a few moments to offer a few reflections on this beautiful passage.

If it should happen to be that it gets boring with my tr- poor words, you can always look at that beautiful s- window of Our Lady over here as something to distract you, for, uh, that's the Lady of the, uh, of the Assumption, so the feast that we celebrate today.

Chris and Beatrice here have a great view, so that should be good.

But I'd like to work backwards in this beautiful passage from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

After all th- that he describes about living in love and the relationship of husband and wife, St. Paul says that this is a great mystery, but wait a minute.

He says the mystery is about Christ and the church.

As I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

Christ and the church, this mystical marriage between the Lamb of God and His bride, the Church, is to be the model of Christian marriage.

In fact, that's part of what it means for marriage between the baptized to be a sacrament, to be the sacred sign.

It's a sign, it's to be a sign, a symbol of the marriage of Christ and the Church that imitate this relationship.

So, I'd like to start from the back of the passage and reflect for a few moments on this relationship between Christ and the Church.

So if we start with Christ, we see that He makes this complete gift of self for the Church in love, ultimately expressed on the cross.

We have a beautiful crucifix up there.

You can see it towards the top of the old high altar.

Christ purifies the Church.

He makes her shine through this complete gift of love, this complete gift of self.

You know, the light of the bride, and we have a bride here that shines with a lot of light today, the light of the bride, the Heavenly City, the bride of the Lamb, is not her own.

It's not her own light.

I don't know if you ever noticed that.

It says that, The city in heaven doesn't have need for light from lamps or the sun, for the Lord God shall give it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

The Lamb of God gives the bride her beautiful light, her splendor.

Think about Our Lady described in the first reading, this woman clothed with the Sun.

Clothed with the Son, it's not really the S-U-N, it's much more the S-O-N, Son.

Clothed with the Son.

She shines, not with her own splendor, but with the splendor of the Lord.

And yet, this splendor is not completely without human cooperation .

for another beautiful detail which is given in the account of Revelation of the Bride of the Lamb, is that she is given this white dress to wear, beautiful white dress to wear.

It symbolizes so many things for us, beginning with purity, and certainly something very important to Chris and Beatrice.

But the white dress it says in Revelation is made up of the righteous deeds of the saints.

And we see here an aspect of our cooperation in the beauty of the Bride of the Lamb, in the beauty of the church.

There is a sense in which that beauty is relative insofar as it's not fixed.

It could be more.

And that's what we're called to do, each one of us, whether we be married or whatever walk of life we are called to live.

Through cooperation with the grace of the Lamb who shines His light upon the church to make her radiant and filled with splendor, we are called to make that response of love as well, the response of that complete gift of self.

And in doing so, in so far as we do so and cooperate with the Lamb, the beauty of this white dress that the church is given to wear will be increased.

And the church on her part, she points to Christ.

That's always what we should be about as a church, worship of the Lord which we do here most especially in the Holy Mass, and pointing to the Lord, pointing to the Savior of the world.

Again, look to Our Lady, beautiful example of the bride, standing for the whole Bride of the Lamb, the whole church.

What does she say in her canticle of praise?

My soul magnifies.

If you wanna use the Latin version, the famous Magnificat, right?

My soul magnifies the Lord.

Doesn't magnify myself, but my soul magnifies the Lord.

That's the mission of the church, to be magnifying the Lord, to be allowing the light of Christ that she has received to shine through her for all the world, that they might be attracted and might come towards that light, and find that purification in Christ that He wishes to share with each and every one of us, each member of the human race.

If we look then as we move further up the passage, Saint Paul spends a lot of time speaking about husbands and how they ought to love their wives like Christ loved the church.

And maybe just a brief thought here, we know again how Christ loved the church all the way to the very end of His life, and an end which was fraught with much suffering and much difficulty.

And yet He went through every bit of that out of a total gift of love for us.

He reminds His disciples elsewhere that, The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, their great ones make their authority over the nations and people they rule felt, but it shall not be so among you, He tells His disciples.

And so, yes, though Saint Paul says in this beautiful analogy of Christian marriage, husband and wives and the church, Christ and the church, he says, yes, the husband has that analogous role to play with that of Christ and that of headship.

And biblical headship is not one of domination.

It's so important, for we tend to read passages like this one with sort of modern ears.

We need to read them with biblical ears.

It's not about domination.

It's about a radical gift of self completely out of love for the other.

That's biblical headship.

That's biblical leadership.

That's the example that Christ Himself shows us and which Saint Paul invites every husband to imitate.

So live for Christ and strive to help your spouse to live for Him as well.

Not really to live so much for you, but to live for Christ.

That's part of the whole point of marriage.

Support her all the way, yet challenge her as needed.

And that challenge ultimately is the same, to lay down your lives, husband and wife together before Christ and for Him.

That's symbolized here as you kneel before the holy altar today as you begin your married life.

As we continue to move up the passage, and yes, this is the part where some of us are tempted just to close off our ears.

But again, we have to listen with biblical ears when Christ speaks to wives and says, Wives, be subordinate to your husbands as to the Lord.

And again, what does that mean?

Ultimately, to be subordinate to Christ our Lord means to submit to His headship which is the headship of the cross, that complete gift of love for us, even in a sense helpless.

Of course Christ is God, He's not helpless, but there's that sense of helplessness of one who is nailed to a cross.

It's a difficult image, but it's a beautiful image.

So to submit to the lordship of Christ and even to submit in a proper way to biblical headship on the part of a husband means to receive the love of Christ, means to receive the love of your husband.

Receive the love.

Who doesn't want to receive love?

And if we're gonna receive love, there's gonna have to be a vulnerability there.

There's gonna have to be an openness there.

There's gonna have to be a laying down of my own life if I'm gonna be able to receive in fullness the love of another.

Once again, we look to that relationship between Christ and the Church to see what this all means.

It's about receiving the love of the crucified Lord and submitting in all things to His headship.

Finally, it's so important for us to remember that once again, St. Paul, in reflecting on Christian matrimony, he speaks with an analogy.

So things aren't perfect in Christian marriage, and everything Chris touches might turn to gold.

We could, uh, grant that for a second, but Chris is not Christ, right?

Doesn't have the perfection of the Lamb, neither does Beatrice, neither does any one of us.

So St. Paul gives us this analogy, says, Look to this, look to Christ and the Church as a model.

You're not gonna fit perfectly into the model, but you can fit perfectly into it in this sense, that marriage is about this mutual selflessness.

Marriage is about making a complete gift, one to another.

It's about helping the other one to shine Christ's light with which the bride is radiant, and Chris doing everything he can to help his bride to be radiant.

And then on the other hand, the bride not owning that light for herself, but seeking to make her husband known and loved even as the Church seeks to make Christ, her Lord, known and loved, and to let everybody know that the light with which I shine doesn't belong to me, but it belongs to Christ, my Lord, to Christ, our Lord.

And we, as a married couple, live for Him in all things.

So may your marriage be beautiful, rich.

May you be blessed with the fruit of married love in children.

May God be with you all the days of your life, and when they draw to a close, may He reward you as faithful servants.

Dearly beloved, you've come together into the house of the Church so that in the presence of the Church's minister and the community, your intention to enter into marriage may be strengthened by the Lord with a sacred seal.

Christ abundantly blesses the love that binds you.

Through a special sacrament, He enriches and strengthens those He has already consecrated by Holy Baptism, that they may be faithful to each other forever and assume all the responsibilities of married life.

And so, in the presence of the Church, I ask you to state your intentions.

Beatrice and Christopher, have you come here to enter into marriage without coercion, freely and wholeheartedly?

Are you prepared, as you follow the path of marriage, to love and honor each other for as long as you both shall live?
