In this session, we're going to look at the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the sacrament that Christ uses to create leaders for his church; bishops, priests, and deacons.
10.88 - 31.66
We'll be drawing upon the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas and later teachings from the Church's Magisterium As good Thomists, we start with created order.
31.82 - 41.98
God created beings and persons with a hierarchy, a chain of being, with certain creatures being higher or more sophisticated than others.
42.36 - 45.54
God uses these differences for the common good.
45.94 - 53.24
The differences glorify God's excellence and largess, his ability to create so much diversity.
53.36 - 57.00
Also, these differences ennoble us creatures.
57.48 - 64.16
God gives certain beings agency, and God works with these agents to bring about greater goods.
64.16 - 73.04
For instance, God has made certain human beings tall and athletic, and so certain basketball players can do a slam dunk.
73.84 - 76.72
Is that unjust to the little child?
77.86 - 82.88
The basketball player can pick up the child, and then the child can do a slam dunk too.
83.44 - 86.76
Everyone wins, and God is glorified.
86.76 - 92.26
In the supernatural order also, God uses hierarchy for the common good.
92.26 - 98.56
Jesus Christ, because he is both God and man, is superior to us mere human beings.
98.60 - 104.44
Christ, in his sacred humanity, serves as a mediator between God and us.
104.50 - 106.62
Christ is thus a priest.
106.62 - 113.74
He offers worship to God, especially the act of sacrifice, the sacrifice of his life and his passion and death.
114.44 - 118.32
And he bestows the gift of grace from God to human beings.
118.32 - 127.56
Christ is the only true priest, for he is the only true mediator, the only person who saves as both God and man.
128.70 - 135.62
But through the sacraments, Christ gives the possibility to participate in his one priesthood.
135.70 - 140.32
Three sacraments configure us into a participation in Christ's priesthood.
140.60 - 144.42
Those sacraments are baptism, confirmation, and holy orders.
144.42 - 148.78
Their sacramental characters are participations in Christ's priesthood.
149.46 - 155.48
By baptismal character, the baptized participate in an initial way in Christ's priesthood.
155.86 - 159.34
Baptism makes a person a member of the lay faithful.
160.06 - 165.86
The baptized receive the holy power to receive further gifts from God, especially Christ's sacraments.
166.60 - 174.90
Those who receive the second sacrament, confirmation, receive the priestly power to witness maturely to Christ and his church.
174.90 - 182.74
Finally, the ordained, the clergy, receive the sacred power to bestow, in an active way, God's grace to others.
182.86 - 186.74
The clergy are Christ's most powerful class of human instruments.
186.90 - 195.42
So the Sacrament of Holy Orders creates sacred ministers whose role is to build up and sustain the Church in the life of grace.
196.44 - 201.14
The highest of clerical acts is to offer the holy sacrifice of the Mass.
201.32 - 201.86
Why?
201.86 - 206.82
Because the Mass gives us Christ's real, full sacramental presence, the Eucharist.
206.82 - 215.16
The next highest work of the clergy are the other sacraments, especially those sacraments that forgive sins; baptism and penance.
215.16 - 220.74
The forgiveness of sins allows people to participate in that highest act, the Eucharist.
220.92 - 227.04
Lastly, the ordained ministers lead the church community by preaching, teaching, and pastoral governance.
227.04 - 231.04
The point there is, again, to bring people to the Eucharist.
231.04 - 235.08
For Aquinas, the high point of life is the Eucharist.
235.50 - 238.16
There are different ways that a man can be ordained.
238.16 - 241.54
These are called grades or ranks or orders.
242.08 - 250.02
The three grades are, from highest to lowest; bishop, presbyter, often called a priest, and deacon.
250.58 - 252.86
They have different powers and roles.
253.24 - 259.02
For St. Thomas, these differences entail different ways to support the Eucharistic life of the Church.
259.22 - 269.28
Both bishops and presbyters can offer the sacrifice of the Mass, forgive sins, bestow blessings, and preach and lead in the name of Jesus.
269.28 - 272.16
But only bishops have the fullness of holy orders.
272.16 - 275.62
Only they, for instance, can ordain another man.
276.50 - 280.66
Without that ability, we wouldn't have priests to celebrate Mass for us.
281.04 - 284.50
So bishops sustain the entire life of the Church.
284.50 - 292.58
Finally, deacons assist in distributing holy communion, and with the church's outreach to the poor and her care of material goods.
292.70 - 297.10
Remember the sacrament's tripartite structure from a few classes ago.
297.50 - 303.98
For holy orders, the first step, the sacramentum tantum, is the liturgical rite of ordination.
304.36 - 307.50
The minister of holy orders is a bishop.
307.94 - 314.28
The sacramental matter is the bishop's laying on of hands on the head of a baptized male.
315.20 - 319.46
That act signifies the conferral of sacred authority.
319.62 - 323.78
The sacramental form is an ordination prayer said by the bishop.
324.00 - 332.30
That speech specifies to which clerical grade the man is being ordained; episcopacy, the presbyterate, or the diaconate.
332.70 - 342.00
Only a baptized male can be ordained, because even in his physical gender, the ordained minister has to serve as an icon of Christ.
342.88 - 352.42
Similar to how it'd be weird if a male actor were to play a woman's role in a movie, so only a man can represent Christ to the Church.
352.86 - 358.36
Only a man can act the role of Christ in an official leadership capacity.
358.72 - 369.00
From that first step of holy orders, the liturgical rite, the man is boosted to a new level; the second step of the sacramental dynamic, the res et sacramentum.
369.00 - 375.14
Here we find the clergyman's sacramental character, that configuration to Christ in his priesthood.
375.42 - 384.44
Finally, the sacrament works through that second level to the third level, the res tantum, which is the sacramental grace conferred upon the man.
384.44 - 389.50
That grace helps the cleric to do a good, holy job acting in the person of Christ.
389.54 - 395.84
From that grace, the clergy serve the laity, the entire Church, indeed, the entire world.
395.84 - 400.24
The clergy exist to serve others and to help them serve God.
400.86 - 406.48
Through the ordained bishops, priests, and deacons, Christ acts to create saints.
